Hospice America Foundation

Increases access to hospice care through public education, professional training and advocacy with the hope that hospice will be an integral part of our society.

Hospice America's mission is to increase access to quality hospice care through public education, professional training and advocacy on behalf of consumers. We will realize our vision for America when 'Hospice' is universally understood, valued, and utilized. Our primary goal is to ensure that all Americans know that hospice offers comprehensive care at home with maximum physical, emotional, and spiritual comfort. When physical comfort at home is not possible, inpatient hospice facilities are available. Bereavement support is offered to the family for more than a year after the death. Hospice America offers innovative programs to serve the needs of terminally ill and grieving individuals of all ages. Our major accomplishments include: (1) a national training program designed to help school counselors and teachers address the needs of grieving students and teach about loss and grief in the classroom; (2) a corporate training program designed to help employers and managers address the needs of dying and grieving employees; (3) an educational campaign in concert with local Area Agencies on Aging to inform seniors about comprehensive hospice coverage included in their Medicare benefits; (4) conferences for major health insurance companies interested in improving benefits and services for dying patients and their families; and (5) practical educational materials used in over 4,000 public and private schools and by more than 2,500 companies. We are proud of our low overhead and fundraising costs which are usually between 17-18% and have never been higher than 20%. This efficiency has been recognized with a 4-star rating (highest awarded) from Charity Navigator, the largest independent charity evaluator in the country. Hospice is a set of services that we all may need someday - if not for ourselves, for our parents. While death is not an option for any of us, we do have choices about the services we use at the end of life. Hospice is undoubtedly the best option in the last months of life because it offers a whole variety of benefits, not only to those of us who are dying, but also to those we leave behind.

The Foundation is a charitable non-profit corporation as defined in section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
