HOW TO DONATE YOUR BOAT
You can contact the Chapman School of Seamanship by phone or e-mail and discuss the donation your watercraft.
From your phone conversation, the School will get the details, location, and overall condition of your vessel or watercraft. They say that it is helpful to have your title handy, because it contains useful information. They will also discuss details of the new tax code rules and regulations. This is helpful to better understand how it will impact your situation.
After that they will contact you to set up an appointment to look at the boat or vessel to determine how best to process and put it in their “for sale” program. The proceeds of the vessel sale go directly back into their training programs. For those of you that are out of state and wish to donate your vessel or watercraft, they will typically send a local representative to examine your vessel. (They have graduates of their marine surveying program across the USA).
The new tax law pertaining to the donation of boats, cars, and other vehicle, included in the “American Jobs Creation Act” and any other tax code changes has generalized guidelines and rules. In the mean time, the new requirements are fairly straight forward.
For boats valued at a certain value or less the School will provide you with a copy of your “Deed of Gift” which includes a description of the vessel, and an official Thank You Letter stating the value of the donation.
