Catholic Charities USA
This is the national office for over 1,700 local Catholic Charities agencies and institutions nationwide. Catholic Charities USA provides a strong leadership and continued support to enhance the work of local agencies in their charitable efforts to reduce poverty, support families, and empower many local communities.
Since 1910, Catholic Charities USA has served as a national advocate for the some of the most vulnerable people in our nation, including but not limited to children, the elderly, the disabled, immigrants, and those who live in both rural and urban communities across the country.
Catholic Charities USA urges America to address the essential problem of housing affordability. To do this, they ask that local communities and governments work together to support affordable housing – eliminating the “not in my backyard” thinking and replacing it with inclusionary zoning policies. They are concerned with all the efforts, processes, programs, and relationships that serve to enhance the understanding and commitment of agency staff and volunteers to the tradition and values of the Catholic Church’s social ministry to the poor and vulnerable. They are also devoted to building healthier communities through housing counseling, developing and maintaining housing units, and shelter services. As well as committed to nurturing, fostering, and supporting Catholic parish leaders who perform direct service, advocacy, community organizing, and justice education activities.
Supporting group members are Catholic Charities USA's partners in mission, sharing a common mission, common values, and individual expertise and perspective. Supporting groups are Catholic institutions not operated by a Diocese. Examples of supporting groups are religious orders, day care providers, facilities for the aging, outreach providers, and advocacy groups.
They also provide support and leadership to charitable agencies on a wide range of issues from adoption and child care to housing, senior services, parish relations and catholic identity. Agency membership is open to any diocesan catholic charities agency.
They work in collaboration with Catholic partners, including the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) and Catholic Health Association (CHA) on many of these advocacy issues.
