Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation
The Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation is a national, non-profit health organization whose mission is the prevention and early detection of cancer through scientific research, education and outreach to medically underserved communities. www.preventcancer.org Research The Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation funds basic and clinical research focusing on cancer prevention and early detection. It provides more than $8 million annually in support of its research, education and community outreach programs. Educational and Community Outreach Programs National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month: The United States Senate officially declared March 2000 as the first annual National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. In an effort to prevent deaths from colorectal cancer, the Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation joins forces each year with 55 partner organizations across the country to implement a national prevention and early detection education campaign. During the month of March and all year long, organizations nationwide sponsor activities to educate the public about colorectal cancer. George Washington University Medical Center's Mobile Mammography Van: The Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation provided a grant to George Washington University Medical Center to design and purchase Washington, D.C.'s first - and only -- mobile mammography facility. The Mammovan provides breast cancer screening and follow-up care to both corporate and low-income women in the Washington, D.C. region. The Foundation continues to underwrite free mammograms for underserved women. Women with positive findings receive all follow-up care needed, regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay. Dr. Health'nstein's Body Fun: This critically acclaimed, interactive CD-ROM game teaches children the importance of a healthy lifestyle in the prevention of cancer and other chronic diseases. Classroom materials and a core curriculum are being used in states nationwide, including Alabama, California, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland and New York. Congressional Families Action for Cancer Awareness Campaign: Since 1991, this bi-partisan outreach effort has utilized the unique platform of Congressional families to educate Americans about cancer prevention, early detection and healthy lifestyle habits. The program's educational materials address breast, prostate, lung, skin, colon, and cervical cancers. The Campaign's reach extends to every congressional district and state nationwide. ¡Celebremos La Vida!: A unique breast and cervical cancer education, screening and early detection program for medically underserved Hispanic women who, because of language barriers, lack of insurance and residency status issues, are unable to access other breast and cervical cancer screening and education programs in the area.
CRPF has partnered with the Step Up Women’s Network and Merck & Co., Inc., on a national public education campaign, Make the Connection, to raise awareness of cervical cancer.
